Total lack of style

After Apple’s “It’s Showtime” event in which they have announced the latest in their iPod product line, Microsoft has started to issue some press releases about their Zune thing… the thing is a 30GB digital media player… an iPod wannabe…

But it has one thing which is unique:

“Of specific interest to TC readers, however, is the social sharing system. The Zune has 802.11 networking built in and you can send a song to your friend for three days or three plays, which ever comes first. The goal, obviously, is to sell music. However, we could also conceivably see this as a MySpace-like network of users who pop music to each other with giddy abandon and infect others with their musical stylings on the train (perhaps a sandwich board that says “I’ll Send My New HARDCORE RAP Single to Your Zune. Talk to me. Please?”) Once you get back home you can connect to the Zune Marketplace - and presumably an artists home page - where you can learn more and buy music.” Techcrunch

The marketplace thing, i mean, why do they call it a “marketplace”!? It’s sooooooo Microsoft… The Zune Marketplace which is supposed to be something like iTunes store is gonna be a seperate application and not part of Windows Media Player…

Anyway, the most important thing is that Apple has nothing to worry about… This Zune thing will be hammered….

Oh yeah… forgot to mention that Zune will come in 3 colors! This is already too many colors for Microsoft… black, white & brown… of course… we all know who came up with black and white…

I think the idea of being able to share music and network through your player is quite appealing and should create a myspace like community. On the other hand, Zune will come preloaded with music, which should make it even more appealing.

As for marketplace; I would presume that they would allow independent artists to sell their music through it, as they do with independent software vendors (ISVs) on Windows Marketplace http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/
